While the term alloy steel could even apply to stainless steel grades, the ASTM specification or ANSI standard used to produce the Alloy Steel Flanges would give the buyer details regarding the chemistry details of these products. Several ANSI/ ASME standards use materials that are forged or cast to produce Cast AS Blind Flanges. Although blind flanges and certain reducing flanges could include plate as a material for construction. This being said, alloys like Chrome Moly Flanges exhibit better corrosion resistance properties. Especially in those environments where the components are susceptible to getting corroded by oxidation or by general corrosion. Molybdenum present in Alloy Steel Lap Joint Flange gives these components some degree of resistance to crevice corrosion and pitting, especially in those environments that contain both chlorides and sulphur.
Many industries prefer using Alloy Steel Flanges over carbon steel flanges because they offer much more in terms of properties i.e. durability, better resistance to corrosion as well as better performance.
Alloy steels are classified into two categories, high alloy steel and low alloy steels. While Low Alloy Steel Flanges contain about 0.05 – 0.25% of carbon along with up to 2.0% manganese. Low alloy steels contain trace quantities of alloyants such as niobium, nitrogen, vanadium, copper, nickel, chromium, titanium, calcium, molybdenum, rare earth elements, or zirconium. In order to strengthen the Chromium AS Flanges, its alloy has added elements i.e. Copper, titanium, vanadium, and niobium.
