Alloy 316 is an austenitic type chromium-nickel stainless steel which contains a substantial content of molybdenum. By the addition of molybdenum in Stainless Steel 316 Flanges is what increases their resistance to general corrosion. And it also improves the flanges pitting resistance properties to chloride ion solutions. The molybdenum addition also provides the ANSI B16.5 Stainless Steel 316 Reducing Flanges with an increased tensile strength at elevated temperatures. Alloy 316 flanges produced according to ASTM A182 are required to conform to the chemistry as well as mechanical properties. Also, the specification mandates the use of a heat treatment process on ASTM A182 F316 Flanges. Thus, stainless steel grade 316 is also known as Mo-Added version of SS304.
On several occasions, grade 316 is often referred to as marine grade steel since SA A182 F316 Forged Flange has excellent resistance to seawater and brine solution.
This is why, perhaps, these flanges are extensively used in several marine engineering applications. Werkstoff No 1.4401 316 Stainless Steel Pipe Flanges have exceptional resistance to corrosion against several acids such as sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid, acetic acid, formic acid, and tartaric acid. These flanges have the ability to resist acid sulfates and alkaline chlorides as well. This is why UNS S31600 316 SS Blind Flange is widely used across several applications involving heat exchangers, cryogenic piping, valve and pump trims, exhaust manifolds, chemical & petrochemical process, pulp and paper industry, pharmaceutical equipment, and food industry, etc.
