Wrought fittings produced in the factory covered by the ASME B16.9 Standard is required to be made in accordance with ASTM A 403. Molybdenum bearing Stainless Steel 316L Pipe Fittings are also referred to as marine grade, due to its superior resistance in marine environments. While the chemistry of grade 316L is similar to stainless steel grade 316, the main difference between these two alloys is the content of both nitrogen and carbon.
Similar to various low carbon containing austenitic stainless steel alloys, the letter L in Stainless Steel 316L Pipe Fittings indicate the presence of not more than 0.030% carbon.
Lowering of carbon in any austenitic stainless steel alloy proves to be detrimental to the fittings. To solve this problem, manufacturers add some amount of nitrogen in the alloy of UNS S31603 316L Stainless Steel Fittings bringing its mechanical properties on similar lines to that of stainless steel alloy 316. Compared to grade 316, the pitting resistance properties of ASME B16.9 SS 316L Fitting is much higher. Although alloy 316L can be readily welded by most conventionally used processes, performing a post weld heat treatment on the Werkstoff Nr. 1.4404 SA403 WP316L Elbow is not necessary. Due to its superior resistance to intergranular corrosion, these fittings could also be used in an as welded condition. Cold working operations performed on the alloy will not only increase the strength and hardness of the ASTM A403 WP316L Pipe Fittings but may also leave it slightly magnetic.
